The Perfect Storm – Empathy and Logophile.

Posted on November 11, 2015 by Chris Cane

veteranIt was the perfect storm. I’m laying in bed, heading for sleep and I think about a seventy-seven-year-old veteran who is being helped by the VA. Help, being the operative word. I had just been thanked for going the extra mile by a buyer at the VA, I had been helping the veteran by ensuring he got the item he needed to treat his problem. All the details need not be disclosed to continue this writing.

I realized I had empathy for this person as in a couple of years, I’ll be in my seventies, not a vet but I guess I could become one of those invisible older folks, needing help and not getting it. I really hope I don’t get shuffled into a corner like this guy had been.

I turned on my smart ‘phone’ and the word of the day was logophile, the love of words, or perhaps more accurately a word nerd.

I learned something scary, I might have ‘lethologica‘ or the inability to recall words, phrases, or names, it is a temporary but debilitating disorder.

I was trying to think of the word litigious, that was on the ‘tip of my tongue,‘  as the reason the veteran was hard to help was that his doctor had written down a part number and a description and they did not match. In this litigious world, the part number and the description had to match of the FDA might find fault and dog knows what might happen.

The word litigious would not enter my head and I first thought of litany, which made me think of cigarettes and I had not litany in many years.

Liturgy jumped in and not being a religious soul, I knew the word was not liturgy.

I might have been literally illiterate at that moment.

My brain continued with other thoughts and I guess I fell asleep and remembered some of my pre-sleep thoughts, now you know a little more about how the brain of cane works.

It can be frightening at times!
